Winston Smith:
The main character of this book he is a determined character who hates the totalitarian government that currently controls his life. He works as a insignificant party member.
Big Brother:
The suspected ruler of Oceania who appears on poster annotated with 'BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU'.
O'Brien
O'Brien is a clever and cunning member of the Inner Party. Winston believes that he is a member of the Brotherhood and eventually they meet and O'Brien confirms his beliefs. During the time when Winston is in custody O'Brien tells him that he is not a member of the brotherhood by works in the Ministry of Love for the party.
Mr Charrington:
He runs a old antiques shop that Winston purchases his diary and later a paper weight from. He seems to hold the same curiosity in the past as Winston does; however, later in the book Winston is betrayed by Mr Charrington who was in fact a member of the thought police
Julia:
Also known as 'The dark haired girl' first frightens Winston as he believes that she is a member of the 'Thoughtpolice' but is later contradicted when she arranges to meet him after slipping a note saying 'I love you' She is rebellious and highly against the totalitarian control
Emmanuel Goldtein:
A dangerous and influential man who aims to bring down the totalitarian government who's whereabouts are unknown.
Parsons & his Family:
Winston dislikes Parsons and states that he is 'fat and obnoxious' He works at the 'Ministry of Truth' along with Winston and his wife struggles under the pressure of the government and how her children have grown up to be a threat to her by joining the junior spies.
Syme:
An intelligent man who works at the 'Ministry of Truth'. he is currently working on the new dictionary of 'Newspeak'. Winston believes that Syme will one day be vaporised for his intelligence.
